'I never wanted a real set of good hearty praisers—and no bad reviewers—I am quite content with my share. No—what I laughed at in my ‘gentle audience’ is a sad trick the real admirers have of admiring at the wrong place—enough to make an apostle swear. That does make me savage—never the other kind of people….'

_

Robert Browning to Elizabeth Barrett, February 11, 1845

Review policy

Sphinx review principles are to

  • approach poetry reviewed with respect

  • evaluate constructively, not destructively

  • write in a reader-friendly and accessible way

  • avoid jargony language

quote enough to allow the reader to form her/his own idea of the poet’s style

Review Rules

Sphinx will only review poetry pamphlets (not books) that comply with the following descriptions:

  • single-author publications of between 20 and 36 pages, excluding preliminaries;

  • publications must be ISBN numbered, but may be self-published;

  • publications must be in print and available for purchase;

  • pamphlets must be submitted for review within twelve months of publication.

If you have a pamphlet you would like reviewed, send at least THREE copies to:

A fourth copy will mean comments from The Young Reader or The Common Reader may also be added. Each publication will receive three reviews posted in the Sphinx online archive, as well as a Sphinx stripe rating drawn from an aggregate of reviewer feedback. Purchase arrangements and price are essential.

Pamphlets cannot be returned. If unsure whether to send yours or not, first email:
